Master Jigoro Kano
Judo was created by Jigoro Kano in Japan, in 1882.
Kano created Judo by combining, refining and modernising the dangerous, traditional hand-to-hand combat techniques of ancient jujutsu into a safer educational and sporting discipline that focused on skill, leverage and mental discipline over brute strength.
Modern Judo is a very popular martial art and olympic sport, that emphasises the use of technique, timing, and balance rather than strength alone.
The aim of Judo is to throw an opponent safely and effectively, control them through pins and other techniques, while developing discipline, confidence, respect, and physical fitness.
Judo is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, making it a fantastic way to learn self defence, have opportunities to compete, build friendships, and improve both body and mind, in a safe and supportive environment.
